چکیده

Genetic subdivision among populations plays a central role in the geographic mosaic theory of co-evolution (Thompson, 1994, 1999a,b; Burdon & Thrall, 1999; Nuismer et al., 1999; Gomulkiewicz et al., 2000). Co-evolution is a process that occurs across a complex geographic landscape, and co-evolutionary interactions are not equivalent across the Department of Biology, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-3700, Department of Biology, Utah State University, Logan, UT 84322-5305, Department of Biology, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4328, USA

Sex-biased Predation on Newts of the Genus Taricha by a Novel Predator and its Relationship with Tetrodotoxin Toxicity

—Newts of the genus Taricha have long been studied in regards to their skin toxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX). It has been shown that the TTX levels across populations of Taricha are highly variable, and this has been mostly attributed to the interaction between Taricha and their only documented predators, garter snakes of the genus Thamnophis. Here we show that predators other than Thamnophis prey ext...

Toxicity and population structure of the Rough‐Skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa) outside the range of an arms race with resistant predators

Species interactions, and their fitness consequences, vary across the geographic range of a coevolutionary relationship. This spatial heterogeneity in reciprocal selection is predicted to generate a geographic mosaic of local adaptation, wherein coevolutionary traits are phenotypically variable from one location to the next. Under this framework, allopatric populations should lack variation in ...

American marten (Martes americana) in the Pacific Northwest: population differentiation across a landscape fragmented in time and space.

American marten (Martes americana) have a close association with mature temperate forests, a habitat that expanded throughout the Pacific Northwest as glaciers receded at the end of the Pleistocene. Similar to several other forest-associated mammals in North America (e.g. black bear), genetic analysis of the marten shows a deep phylogeographical subdivision that reflects populations with distin...

Molecular differentiation of sheep and cattle isolates of Fasciola hepatica using RAPD-PCR

Understanding genetic structure and status of genetic variation of Fasciola hepatica isolates from different hosts, has important implications on epidemiology and effective control of fasciolosis. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) was used to study the genetic variation of F. hepatica in sheep and cattle. DNA was extracted from adult helminthes removed from livers of each infected ani...

The evolutionary origins of beneficial alleles during the repeated adaptation of garter snakes to deadly prey.

Where do the genetic variants underlying adaptive change come from? Are currently adaptive alleles recruited by selection from standing genetic variation within populations, moved through introgression from other populations, or do they arise as novel mutations? Here, we examine the molecular basis of repeated adaptation to the toxin of deadly prey in 3 species of garter snakes (Thamnophis) to ...
